Endotoxins & Herxheimer Reactions in Healing from Lyme and Other Diseases

The full name is Jarisch-Herxheimer Reaction (after the founder) and the more commonly used term is a “herx”. There are many theories and ideas about what a herx reaction really is, what its caused by and what it means clinically. Essentially a herx reaction is an immune system reaction to the endotoxins that are released when large amounts of Bb are dying off due to effective treatment. The reason herx reactions vary from person to person is due to a couple of reasons.

Firstly each person has different pathogen loads - the more pathogens the more endotoxins are released when they die. Secondly a herx reaction is affected by how well your body is detoxing, so if the body can’t eliminate the endotoxins quickly enough (either through poor detoxification pathways or pure overload) then a herx reaction will occur. The severity and duration of the herx is once again affected by the above factors.

Adjusting Baby Benjamin

Here I am adjusting a family friends baby with an audience! I suppose it would be something new to see how a baby gets 'adjusted' . Treating infants is relatively new in chiropractic terms - around 15 years or so. They were suprised to learn that there are no bones cracked, instead fingerpoint pressure is used to manipulate the spine.

What it does is coach the nervous system to be coordinated and calm. And who doesnt want a more relaxed, balanced, healthier, coordinated and well rested baby? Apart from the actual birth process where babies are sprained and strained, the biggest part of the nervous system we affect is babies sleeping, eating and pooing, which is what baby Benjamin was getting helped with here.

Fighting Stress with Nutrition

It is essential in times of stress that you maximize your nutrient intake by including a broad range of whole foods in our diet and reduce the amount of processed foods. Whole foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds and lean proteins contain numerous key phytonutrients, some of these are;

Vitamins and minerals; found in fresh fruit and vegetables. These are particularly important as when your body is undergoing stress as you require a higher amount of these nutrients to aid with energy production and stress adaption. Furthermore fresh fruit and vegetables (especially green leafy vegetables) are essential for you as they keep your body in an alkaline environment, thereby keeping your cells in there most optimal state for providing your body with energy.

Stress - It's impact on your body and a holistic approach to help you deal with it!

When it comes to stress, people are either overly aware of it or totally in denial of it, but the reality is that in this modern, busy society it is no longer a question of whether you have stress in your life, but how much stress is in your life and how is it adversely affecting the quality of your life.

The “day to day stress” is very apparent if you take the time to listen to family or friends discussing their daily routines.

Sciatica

We get quite a few inquiries about sciatica at our Kings Cross/Potts Point Healthspace Clinic and I thought it would be good to address the topic as it is an extremely painful and debilitating condition for many Australians.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica relates to the set of symptoms resulting from pressure or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve running from the lower back/pelvis region down the back of the leg. The sciatic nerve is formed by the joining of the five lower spinal nerve roots. Therefore compression or pressure of  any of the lower five spinal nerve roots can also result in the symptoms of sciatica. There are a number of different possible causes of sciatic nerve pressure that can result in the symptoms of sciatica.

Lyme Disease... You can heal yourself... naturally!

My name is Kate Wood and I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease last year and have had an interesting journey over the last 8 months. At this time, the Australian Government does NOT recognise Lyme as a Disease that can be contracted in Australia. This means there also isn’t a lot of information available that is specific to Australian’s trying to get diagnosed and treated.

Being a health professional has inspired me to write a book to help others like myself to recover from Lyme Disease, ideally naturally. Below is the introduction from my book that is in progress. If anyone is suffering with Lyme Disease, knows someone who is or thinks they might have it, please feel free to join our Lyme Support Group by emailing me at kate@healthspaceclinics.com.au.

Forward Head Carriage

by Nick Woods

Forward head carriage (FHC) is a commonly recognised stressor to a person's health. Good posture is simple and eloquent by design in form and function. The body is designed to have the head, rib cage and pelvis perfectly balanced upon one another in both the front and side views.

If the posture is deviated from normal, then the spine is also deviated from the normal healthy position. Any measurable deviation from normal posture causes weakening of the spine as well as increased stress on the nervous system which adversely affects overall health.

Lose The Weight

Watching the Biggest Loser - the Next Generation, the latest Australian Edition on Channel 10, got me thinking about weight and dieting. It's a frequent refrain with many clients in my practice who struggle to balance a healthy diet, exercise, work life balance and family issues like picking up the kids from daycare whilst working insane hours at a desk or out in the field.

So for today's blog post, I'd like to explore the consequences of the impact of carrying extra weight on the body from a chiro's point of view... and in the process answer oft-asked questions on the subject.
